I recommend this book for anyone wanting to better understand the paleo diet or is considering the change to a paleo lifestyle. This story had humor, stagecoach robbers, some sexual harassment, rape, and true love that transcend time. It's subsequently been useful to me in its treatment of Melnikov's method, and to review ideas in bifurcation theory.
As the other reviewer pointed out, it is weak in the section on symbolic dynamics. Also, the conversations that happened in the novel were boring because of the author's tendencies towards over describing. I would recommend it for a person that has had Calculus, Differential Equations (1st and 2nd order) and the LaPlace transform. The subject of dynamical systems has been around for over a century now, having been defined by Henri Poincare in the early 1900s, but having its roots in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics in the 19th century.
