Editorial : About the Author
Nicholas Culpeper (1618-54) was a physician and herbalist during the reign of Elizabeth I, whose practice in East London was famous for treating the poor for no charge. His masterwork, The English Physician (known as Culpeper's Herbal) was published posthumously.

From Amara Dulcis to Yarrow, All-Heal to Viper's Bugloss, Culpeper's Complete Herbal and English Physician Enlarged offers remedies for all ills known to Seventeenth century society. Together with the alphabetical section on herbs, their provenance and properties, there is The English Physician and Family Dispensary, which provides an astrologo-physical discourse of the human virtues in the body of man. Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654) studied at Cambridge and became an apothecary, physician and astrologer in London. Whilst only the imprudent would follow his dictates today without question, the Herbal remains a fascinating historical treatise, and stands as a monument to botanical and medical science.

It was very informative. Somebody had to edit its English for heaven's sake! Lack of correct English language makes it difficult to follow the concepts. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. This idea has been further elaborated and developed into the theory of dissipative structures in which the dynamics of complex systems are described and explained.

For the general readers, I would recommend "Order out of Chaos: Man's New Dialogue with Nature" (Prigogine and Stengers, 1984) as a primer before going into this volume. There are actually several kid-approved recipes in there, and finding foods that are safe and actually taste good is invaluable!. The author does a good job of describing these stories.
