Editorial : This book you'll want as soon as possible, so you have time to mark pages and list "must haves." -- Belt Pulley Magazine, December 2003

The triumph of the EDC depended almost wholly on the efforts and expertise of utterly dedicated and outstanding electronics specialists like them, not on mathematicians, logicians and generalists like von Neumann or even Turing. But that did not save the novel. Ferenczi did things for psychology that were unconventional and worthwhile for counselors to know about. Instead, I get a solid albeit "research-feeling" book about John von Neumann's project to construct Turing's vision of a Universal Machine. If you want to know about the basic underpinnings of our digital universe, this is a great place to start even with its omissions. While Barbary Shore was certainly not my all time favorite book in the entire world, I could not put it down, either. Working on computing and thinking about biology, von Neumann anticipated the genesis of self-reproducing machines which have fueled the imagination of both science fiction fans and leading researchers in nanotechnology.
